Welcome to Untamed Adventures, an adventure blog (of sorts) by me,
Alexander Knight. I have always led a pretty active lifestyle. Some of my
favorite activities include caving, kayaking, mountain biking and
photography
although my true passion is for all things climbing. Some might even say
that climbing has become an obsession of mine--and I would have to agree.
I began rock climbing in 2003 at Joe Rockheads, a local indoor gym.
Despite a near crippling fear of heights my fascination with climbing
overpowered the phobia itself. As my skills improved and a rudimentary
technique began to develop, confidence increased. Reluctantly I ventured
outdoors and onto actual rock. I remember those first climbs as if it were
yesterday--sheer terror. It was as if I had just begun climbing all over
again and the fear of heights returned with a vengeance. Thinking back, I'm not really sure I could offer a
clear explanation as to why I continued to climb. I just did.
Over the years my love of the sport has never faltered. Personal
responsibilities have not permitted me to focus as much time on climbing
as I would have liked, but each year I do see some form of improvement,
however modest. Top roping turned into sport climbing, sport climbing
turned into traditional climbing, then ice climbing and finally aid.
Always seeking the next, more difficult challenge, my sights eventually turned toward the mountains.
While outings are aimed at having fun, it should be noted that alpine
climbing by its very nature can be physically demanding, technically
challenging and in many situations life threatening. Mountain terrain,
wildlife and weather can be unpredictable and dangerous. |

There are a number of great companies that can teach you virtually everything
you need to know--which is substantial. However, I live with my son here
in Toronto and work long hours just to make ends meet. Geographic
location, finances and time were all obstacles (and continue to be) that
had to be addressed. All things considered, I felt my best option was to learn the skills myself and
plan climbing trips independently. I have been a member of the Alpine Club of Canada
since
2008 yet due to a hectic schedule still organize my own
adventures, inviting others to join me.
Group outings are inexpensive because I take a serious no-frills approach
when planning them. Sharing accommodations,
equipment, and transportation all help reduce our costs. Although there are
some sacrifices with regards to personal comfort, trips are typically very
enjoyable. They are a great way to meet new
people, make new friends, share knowledge and visit new and exciting places. An additional
benefit is the
reduced carbon footprint due to carpooling. Please note that the majority
of trips will be climbing or caving related.
If you are interested in attending a climbing trip with me but are unsure
if it may be right for you, please contact me to discuss the trip
itinerary, shared costs, your personal abilities & experience, and your
expectations.
